SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s music department will launch a webinar entitled “Entrepreneurship in Music,” starting Thursday, February 11th at 11:10 am, where guest attendees will share methods for starting and sustaining a career in music .
Panelists include David Cutler, professor and director of music entrepreneurship at the University of South Carolina (UofSC), and Mark Tonelli, assistant professor of guitar and entrepreneurship at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

“The aim of the webinar is to educate college-aged musicians and empower them to think entrepreneurially about their careers in music,” said Arthur White, Cal Poly’s director of jazz studies and moderator of the panel. “With the decline in traditional career opportunities, students need to adapt with foresight, ingenuity, diversity, and a clear plan of attack.”
Cutler has had a varied career as a jazz and classical musician, composer, collaborative musician, author, speaker and educator. Prior to his appointment at UofSC, he taught at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has performed at music schools in the United States and abroad and with ensemble assignments for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Milan Classical Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Chamber Ensemble, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, and Boston Brass collaborated and composed. and Airmen of Note Air Force Big Band.
He has worked with singer Nancy Wilson, trumpeter Sean Jones, clarinetist David Krakauer, the Anderson & Roe piano duo and saxophonist Benny Golson. As the leading voice on the subject of art leadership and music entrepreneurship, he wrote the book “The accomplished musician: making a career, earning a living and making a difference”.
Mark Tonelli, Assistant Professor of Guitar and Entrepreneurship at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois
Tonelli is a fellow of the Coleman Foundation Faculty Entrepreneurship. Before joining Millikin, he was guitarist for the Army West Point Jazz Knights for ten years. As a soloist for the band, he has performed with a wide range of world-renowned musicians, including Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Adam Nussbaum, the Boston Pops and the New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet.
Tonelli conceived and co-edited the book “Entrepreneurship in Action: The Power of Student Enterprises”, based on his experience as director of the Millikin Arts Café. He has lectured at major national music conferences such as the Jazz Education Network, the National Association for Music Education, and the College Music Society. Tonelli was a visiting clinician at Cal Poly in 2019.
