Dubai, January 19th: Dr. Devid Frank Fernandes, an NRI entrepreneur, philanthropist and film producer known for his business acumen and charitable activities, received the ET Business Excellence Award for 2020 for excellence in entrepreneurship and social service. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the awards were given virtually.
Dr. Frank was born in Thottam, Karnataka, and trained at a local fishing school. He then moved to Mumbai in 1968. He also worked at Larsen & Toubro and other companies before moving to the UAE in 1977. After working as an employee at UASC (then Kuwait Shipping), he made shipping and freight forwarding his main form of business. In 1989 he founded the Mosaco Shipping & Forwarding Company LLC with only eight employees.
Mosaco Shipping & Forwarding Company has come a long way since its inception and is now a six-time award-winning provider of modern logistics facilities in the UAE. Over 23,454 projects have been completed in 38 countries.
Dr. Frank’s sincerity in management and the superior quality of the services provided at Mosaco have earned him numerous awards. As well as being a successful entrepreneur, he is known for giving back to society and his hometown. His charitable activities and peace missions have brought him love and admiration for the people. Dr. Frank was also actively involved in sponsoring many social organizations in the UAE.
“My main motto is to serve humanity for humanitarian reasons,” he often says.
Dr. Frank is also an admirer of literature and the cultural arts and is known for providing financial support to people who work in the field. In 2017 he was also elected President of ‘Tulunadochhaya’, a two-day mega Tulu Ayona event. The event was attended by over 2 Lac people. Due to his passion for the field of art, he also founded his own production house ‘Ferns Movie International’, a renowned trilingual production house. This helped him venture into acting and play various roles in different films.
In 2019 he was also awarded the “Vishwa Taulava Chakravarthi” award at “Taulava Uchchaaya”, an international conference on the Tulu language organized by Tulunada Rakshana Vedike. When Dr. Frank accepted the honor, he said, “I was born and bought up in Tulunadu. It is my responsibility to repay to my motherland, where I have the perfect base for all of my successes. When someone forgets their past and ways , how he is.” Growing up is synonymous with turning into a negative personality. You all know that my mother tongue is Konkani. But I have the same respect for Tulu, a language of the soil in which I was born. As an entrepreneur, it’s easy for me to expand financial support for language promotion. But just events and promotions would not be enough to achieve our goal. We have to teach ours
Language for our next generation who are more familiar with the English language. We should pass on our rich culture and heritage to our children. “
Dr. Frank is very proud of his family; his wife Alice Fernandes, his four sons and a daughter who have gone through his ups and downs with him and have motivated him to achieve his goals in life.
Dr. Frank had a difficult and emotional time as his daughter Sharon and son-in-law died prematurely in Dublin last year.
