Jahmil French, who performed Dave Turner on ‘Degrassi,’ useless at 29


Jahmil French, an actor who appeared in “Degrassi: The Next Generation” from 2009 to 2013, has died. He was 29 years old.

On Tuesday, the actor’s agent, Gabrielle Kachman, confirmed his death in a statement to the US TODAY.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the death of a dear friend and customer, Jahmil French,” she said. “Many will remember him for his passion for the arts, his dedication to his craft and his vibrant personality. I ask that you keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Kachman did not give the cause of French death.

The French “Degrassi” co-stars took to Twitter to mourn his death after the news.

“Heartbroken over the loss of our friend Jahmil French,” wrote Annie Clark, who played Fiona Coyne on the show, and also released a clip of French dancing. “In this video I’ll always think of him. So full of energy and fun. He’s always danced. A real talent and a great friend. We’ll all miss you so much, Jahmil.”

“Bhandurner forever in my heart,” wrote Melinda Shankar, who played Alli Bhandari.

Dylan Everett, who played Campbell Saunders, recalled that French was one of the first people he met while working on the show, and that the actor “immediately made me feel welcome”.

“I wanted to pay my respects to an incredibly kind, fun, and talented person; Jahmil French,” wrote Everett. “He disarmed you with a smile and his confidence and energy were infectious. You will be missed, brother.”

Chloe Rose, who played Katie Matlin, tweeted that she was “still in shock”.

“We will miss Jahmil,” she added. “He was an integral part of the Degrassi family and certainly a large part of my Degrassi days. He always wanted to make people laugh and smile, a real pleasure to be here. Rest in peace.”

Stefan Brogren, who played Archie “Snake” Simpson, said he was “sick of the news of Jahmil’s death”.

“He performed Dave with such sensitivity and thoughtfulness and made me laugh so easily,” Brogren continued. “He was a pleasure to work with and we will miss him. This is a real loss. Rest in peace.”

Producer Joshua Safran wrote that he would have more to say about French later but was still “processing this devastating news about his friend.”

According to IMDB, the French played Dave Turner on “Degrassi: Minis” from 2009 to 2010 and also the role on “The Next Generation”. He went on to appear on the shows “The Divide”, “Remedy”, “Let’s Get Physical” and “Soundtrack”.
