Leicester Metropolis 1-Zero Southampton: Kelechi Iheanacho earns Foxes first FA Cup last spot since 1969

The last four FA Cup goals at Wembley have been scored by African players – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hakim Ziyech and Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City reached their first FA Cup final since 1969 when Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal in the second half brought victory over Southampton at Wembley.

Iheanacho benefited from the good work of Jamie Vardy, who scored on the second try 10 minutes after the break.

The game was played in front of 4,000 followers as part of a pilot project. It was investigating whether fans can return to sporting events if coronavirus restrictions are relaxed.

Tickets were restricted to residents of Brent – the North London borough where Wembley Stadium is – and key personnel.

Those at Wembley had a mostly boring game, but Leicester, which has played in its first semifinals since 1982, won’t care – and neither will their supporters.

Strangely enough, Southampton lacked intensity and hardly threatened Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Ibrahima Diallo came closest to equalizing the Saints, but his powerful drive only narrowly missed.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will face Chelsea in the final on May 15th. This is her first appearance since losing 1-0 to Manchester City in 1969.

More will follow.
