This refers to “MSMEs, Retail NPAs May Rise As Relief Measures Unwind” (July 2nd). True, the RBI has taken a plethora of measures in the recent past to give a boost to MSMEs that have been hard hit by the pandemic.

The Emergency Credit Guarantee Program, the No Loss Restructuring Plan and the Svanidhi Small Provider Program, to name a few, will give this sector, which is on the verge of collapse, some respite. However, all of these measures will only work if there is no risk of the loans defaulting on the bank’s books within 90 days.

If MSMEs contribute 30 percent of GDP, it would be able to give them special treatment in the context of the devastation caused by the pandemic. The RBI should therefore consider extending the current standard for recording income and classifying assets from 90 days to 180 days in order to classify this sector’s credit accounts as NPA. This will help them generate adequate returns to meet their banking obligations.

This relaxation should be allowed for at least two years, by which time Covid would hopefully have been contained.

Speaking of ‘keeping the skies clear of rogue drones’ (July 2), the drone attack on Jammu Air Force Station is a grave wake-up call for our armed forces. Like any other technological tool, drones can be abused by rogue elements.

While drones are used to deliver medicines, watch over farmland, take videos / pictures at functions, etc., it has now also been seen how they can be abused. It is time for the National Counter Rogue Drone Guidelines to be implemented verbally and in writing. The government should incentivize all startups that want to develop technology to counter such threats.

Countries have moved into drone-based warfare. This inevitably had to penetrate the domain of non-state actors. Small AI-powered drones cost a little more than a high-end smartphone. And their concept of self-destruct would make it almost impossible to find those responsible for an attack.

Governments around the world must work primarily to combat deadly autonomous weapons. This is a major challenge as many nations carry drones as part of their arsenal.

China’s path from a war-torn, impoverished and medieval society to the second largest economy in the world under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is truly astounding.

The CCP is now celebrating its 100th anniversary and has every reason to be proud of its accomplishments, such as lifting hundreds of millions from crippling poverty and positioning itself firmly as a formidable challenger to the United States, the world’s only superpower.

However, it has its own cup. Although the CCP has reached new heights of economic growth and technological advancement over the decades, the CCP’s iron grip on all government organs with blatant disregard for the fundamental freedoms of its citizens has resulted in its being branded as an autocratic regime.

The CCP leadership will have to ponder the sustainability of its style of government.

This refers to ‘football is coming home?’ (2nd July). Apart from Belgium and Italy, the remaining three games will be like duels between David and Goliath.

It may be interesting that no team has played as many games (31) in this championship as England without ever reaching the final; The breathtaking goal by Patrick Schick of the Czech Republic from the Scottish half is considered one of the greatest goals of all time in this cup. and only the Czech Karel Poborsky (six) has provided more assists since 1980 than the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (five).
