Maharashtra accounts for 58% of all cases and 34% of all deaths from coronavirus in the country, Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan said at a news conference Tuesday.

“Out of the 10 districts with the most cases, 7 are from Maharashtra,” he said.

The health minister also dismissed Chhattisgarh as a cause for concern in the second wave of infections. “Although Chhattisgarh is a small state, 6% of all Covid cases and 3% of all deaths are reported in the country,” he said.

50 high-level, multi-disciplinary public health teams were deployed in districts reporting increases in cases and mortality to assist local authorities with surveillance, control and containment efforts. The teams will visit 30 districts of Maharashtra, 11 districts of Chhattisgarh and 9 districts of Punjab.
