The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected two people to join the club’s newly formed management and coaching development program as part of their commitment to “promoting diversity, inclusion and helping break down barriers in hockey.”
Marian Agyei-Gyamera has been selected for the management program while TJ Millar has been selected for coach development, the NHL club announced on Friday afternoon.
Agyei-Gyamera will spend time with the Leafs’ front office over the coming season, working with team president Brendan Shanahan, GM Kyle Dubas, assistant GM and Marlies senior VP Laurence Gilman, and members of the scouting and business management team.
Agyei-Gyamera previously worked with Commonwealth Sport Canada and Ringette Ontario on marketing and communications. She also joined the Black Canadian Coaches Association as a program manager.
Millar, 27, joins the Leafs after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Bonnyville Junior A Pontiacs, where he coached defenders while doing video analysis and player nutrition.
The club said Millar will have mentoring opportunities on and off the ice with head coach Sheldon Keefe and his staff, the club’s player development staff, the organization’s ECHL and AHL coaching staff, and various other leaders within the hockey program.
The couple will “gain valuable professional hockey front office and coaching experience, increase (their) social capital within the broader hockey community and bring a new perspective within the Maple Leafs organization,” the club said in a statement.
The program was presented in May.
The NHL and the NHL Coaches’ Association have established similar programs.
