Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday about the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Modi has been working on the phone with prime ministers for the past few days to take stock of the pandemic situation in their states.

Maharashtra was the worst hit state during the second wave of COVID-19 infections. Although some of its cities, including Mumbai, have steadily improved, the situation in many parts of the state remains worrying.

The state recorded over 54,000 new cases of COVID-19 in one day, according to the latest update.
