Roomkey is one of the competitors who want to free us from Zoom with their own kind of mini metaverse. The Roomkey Metaverse is a social event space in which 40 people meet in a 3D room with animated avatars with voice chat.

On May 27th, Roomkey is hosting a Social Entrepreneurship Festival with Twitter co-founder Biz Stone hosting it in a room where people have audio conversations. Stone, an investor in Roomkey, will receive a crowd of around 40 people during the pandemic who will speak about social entrepreneurship by invitation only. While this is a small group, it could fill a niche for events where the number of people is less important than the crowd.

Roomkey will also regularly host a dozen shows such as a virtual art gala, weekly entrepreneurship breakfast, venture capital talk show, musician mixer, diversity meetups, podcasts, fundraiser, and other topics. The platform looks like a virtual reality experience, but it isn’t. You can participate on iOS, Android, or the web. First you create a character and then you attend an event for as long as you are invited to it.

“I hope to bring this closer to the world,” said Roomkey inventor Don Stein in an interview with GamesBeat. “There’s a lack of social anxiety since you don’t have to turn on your camera.”

Stein started the company as Teeoh and turned it into Roomkey when he developed technology like an audio engine. It took a couple of years. Competitors include clubhouse with large audio stages and groups, but without animated avatars, as well as spatial with virtual reality and mobile versions.

The avatars make gestures while you are talking to other people. You can talk to an entire room or just to the people at your table. You can make people gesture or move to another table.

“This is our first real event for the press and we are going to think about it [this] our rebranding and relaunch, ”said Stein.

He said that you can mingle with other people without the problem of worrying about your own appearance. And with a limit of 40 people in the room, Roomkey focuses on intimate gatherings and tries to fill the rooms with high performing people. If the event warrants, Roomkey can also stream videos of the event to livestream viewers.

He believes that as a result of the pandemic, many people have realized the importance of being in touch with family, friends, and even strangers. The human connection is an integral part of our daily energy and mental health.

Stein said that in a year that Zoom is making millions of thank you letters to keep us connected, finding these fun moments of chance has been difficult. They usually appear at events, on public transport, in bars, and at dining tables with friends.

Stone will share his own thoughts on social entrepreneurship during the Roomkey Metaverse event. Stein hopes the event space will help us move into a new normal in which we return to physical events and also attend more virtual events in a new normal. The company has raised $ 5.3 million and has 10 employees.
