University of Alaska Fairbanks students can earn a Certificate in Sports Business Management through a 12-week online partnership with edX that consists of three four-week courses.
According to the UAF, the certification program will showcase all aspects of the business side of the sport, including event management, marketing, facilities and analysis. The students get to know the inner workings of the sports industry, how they can build up their skills and their network and use their experiences for successful careers. Two courses focus on specific skills: one teaches sales information and the other covers data-driven decisions.
“This program has been developed by industry experts and professionals and focuses on career development and fundamental knowledge,” said Owen Guthrie, UAF eCampus Director. “Anyone who completes this certificate will have the skills and knowledge to pursue a career or degree in the sports business.”
Students can register online according to their own schedule and complete the courses online. Courses are free, but professional certification requires the student to complete graded assessments as part of the paid verified course, which is $ 149 per course.
Courses are held by industry professionals including a professional sports agent, corporate partnership marketing manager for the Dallas Cowboys, and partnership development manager for the Charlotte Hornets.
Since partnering with edX in August 2020, UAF has developed eight courses for the platform. More than 7,100 students from 134 countries have registered for the UAF’s edX courses. EdX is the leader among platforms that offer massive online open courses (commonly known as MOOCs). UAF chose to partner with edX because of its consortium model, nonprofit status and commitment to innovation and open education.
