Professor Pat Francis, director of the University of Guyana’s recently established Institute for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (UGIRIE), says the institution can play a novel role in creating the link between science and the making of initiatives that are “real” Contributions to Guyana are development.

According to Professor Francis, UGIRIE dates back more than a decade and stems from the “mountain” of papers and proposals, the academic efforts of students and staff lying on shelves and cabinets that have not been examined for their likely practical relevance . These academic ideas, according to Professor Francis, may well have resulted in many of the country’s “best and brightest” suffering in a state of underperformance or otherwise choosing to migrate.
