Alexander Zverev reached the quarter-finals of the US Open with a victory over Jannik Sinner.

The German, who lost to Dominic Thiem in the final in New York last year, defeated the Italian Sinner 6: 4, 6: 4, 7: 6 (9: 7).

The fourth seeded Zverev saved five points in the third when Sinner hit back before he secured victory with his own serve in two hours and 28 minutes.

He will play against one of the two home favorites Reilly Opelka or South Africa’s Lloyd Harris for a semi-final place.

Zverev is in a winning streak of 15 games after taking the Cincinnati Open title ahead of the US Open and Olympic gold in Tokyo.

He is one of the favorites to challenge number one in the world Novak Djokovic – who is facing an American wildcard Jenson Brooksby in the night session on Arthur Ashe – for the title.

Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini is also in action on Monday against the German qualification Oscar Otte.
